Superstorm Sandy

I always considered myself blessed to live on the Jersey Shore. Really, who wouldn't love to have the beach in their backyard. For 34 years, yes every year since I was born, I never missed an opportunity to make a memory at the shore. I must have made the trip over the bridge to Long Beach Island thousands of times ....from my car seat when I was a child to the drivers seat with my littles just a few months ago. I have walked the boards from Wildwood to Spring Lake over and over again. I celebrated birthdays in Atlantic City and danced with friends in clubs along Seaside, Belmar, and Sea Bright. Almost every memory I have growing up, almost every celebration, almost always involved the shore.

When Zoey was born I wanted her to see the beauty of living at the shore, of being a short 5 mile ride to the beach.... and princess rocked it - she loved her some beach.

Some days we would head over the bridge as early as nine in the morning and not cross back over until six or seven at night. She would play with her friends.... building sand castles and splashing in the waters.

Education at the beach - Snails!

And the boardwalk and amusement rides....baby girl riding with her cousin just like I did when I was a kid.  In Zoey's short 5 years, she has gotten to experience the rides in Wildwood, Atlantic City, Ocean City, Seaside, and Point - many a times over.

She got to experience the sweet taste of cotton candy after riding the rides all day long.

And even celebrated her birthday and a few friends birthday's at Fantasy Island.

Naturally, when baby boy came home the first place we took him was - the beach!

and he rocked it too.

This is the last picture I took on Long Beach Island... it was September, the colder air was coming
and we were having one last after school beach day before summer was really over.

Its so hard to believe that with one storm so much can be washed away.

We sat in darkness like so many others - listening to the trees crack, howling winds, destruction - not really knowing just how bad things were outside. A few times during the night I tried to look out but it was just darkness. I remember thinking about James, and wondering if the news of the storm reached Korea and if his foster family was worried like I was when news aired here in the states about mudslides in Seoul when I was waiting to bring James home. No matter how scary the storm sounded I never in a million years thought that we would be waking up to what we woke up to.

It wasnt so bad in my neighborhood, and without power anywhere nobody had a clue just how bad it was just a few miles away. Images started surfacing on facebook, via phone connections that were intermitent, and everyone quickly relaized that this was a nightmare.

When the president flies into the same local airport you use to assess the damages you just know it isn't good.

Its hard to believe these dwellings were places people called home.

It is hard to believe that so many people are without homes,
and that one of those events that you never think will happen in your lifetime, in your hometown - just did.

I have friends who have been displaced, family who suffered flooding and loss, my church is stationing the national guard, and every where you look there is a lingering sign of what devestation that bitch   Superstorm Sandy caused.

While we were quite lucky with just the inconvience of downed trees and loss of power others lost so much more. It is heartbreaking to see peoples belongings..their memories..their joy.. piled at the curb.

It is hard to imagine what the days, months, even years ahead will bring.

Please continue to pray for all those affected and continue to support all the efforts to restore the shore.

Post Placement Finished

In 2010 we started the process....

...In 2011 we were matched with this sweet face...

After waiting and waiting ....
pleading and praying...

flying halfway around the world and getting back on the plane with
empty arms....

and continuing to wait...
13 long months before finally having him home...forever.

The visits with our social worker have been finished.
We have been granted the consent to adopt.

We are ready to petition the courts and have them grant what our hearts have known for a very long time.

That this little boy is ours, he is our son, and he will forever be.
That from the moment we knew of him he was so very loved.

That he was so worth the wait and wait and wait.
That we would have waited forever if it meant he would be our son.

That somehow through all the loss in adoption something beautiful is created.

The beauty is called Family.

Once upon a time you were just a dream.

A desire to parent another child... a seed planted in my heart...

Slowly that dream grew.

So blesses to say

we made a wish.....and you came true.

And in the coming weeks we will stand before the judge and oficially become a forever family.

One blessed Omma.

James Turned 2 !!!!

Guess who turned 2 ?

We are a little behind in the blogging world - his birthday was September 23rd.

When it comes to birthdays we like to celebrate - big!!!

We know that both of our children are ours by miracles. They both have these
unique stories that remind us how blessed we are to be their parents.
The journey to become a family was hard and has taught us to really celebrate
life.....especially our childrens lives...and all the joy that they bring us.

Last year, my heart was hurting because I couldn't celebrate with this sweet boy.
I hadn't yet met him and he had no idea who i was .....but I was his mother..
and I wanted to celebrate with him.

This year, my sweet boy was home and we celebrated TOGETHER!!!

Opening presents when he woke up.

Pushing around his new shopping cart - that he since turned into his "janitor cart".
He fills it up with his fake cleaning products, broom, and bucket and pushes it around.
This little boy is so smart - he is so clever - and just figures things out!

Big sister was very excited to celebrate her brothers big day and even helped decorate.

Since James loves animals (like really loves....like he bonded with the pet guinea pig the first 15 minutes home and they still adore each other) we knew that he had to have a farm party.

A John Deere Farm Party

With tractor wheels...

pitch forks, shovels, hay bales, chicken feed, and lots of yummy food too.

James' farm cake. 2 weeks later he still carries around those little animals.

Special friends from Korea were there.

And one special guest... The only person to celebrate James' Birthday with him last year in Korea....
his buddy Cole. Cole and James were together in the same room celebrating before his mom and I even became friends. When they met again here in NJ it was like they were instant friends - like they knew each other forever. I am so thankful for the friends that I have met on this journey...and so very thankful for the friendships that James is creating.

The day was everything I had dreamed of for my sweet little boy.

On a scale of 1-10 it was off the charts at 100+.

He loved all of the animals. As soon as he saw them he did that deep
belly Uh uH uH pointing thing he does. Only two things gets that big belly chuckle...firetrucks (which is recent - like seriously today) and animals.

He points his finger and the excitement just follows.
This boy loves him some animals.

I wish everyday could be a petting zoo 2nd Birthday kinda day.

Sweet baby boy...words can't explain how blessed
we are to call you our son. We have physically only been your parents
for a short time, but you have grown in our hearts since so very long ago. So
blessed to get to spend the rest of forever together.

Half Way Around The World

Half way around the world is a person that I have never met and I know
very little about...yet, I feel this huge connection that stretches across the ocean
all the way back to South Korea.

Sometimes when James smiles his larger then life smile I wonder what she looks like.
I wonder if she is on the other side of the pond wondering if he is happy, what he is doing,
how he is growing.

Other times I am driving..and I look into my rear view mirror and see this sweet innocent
boy who has already been through so much in his short little life and the tears fall down my
cheeks as I wonder if she will ever know how much this little boy means to us.

(yeah, thats corn on the cob)

I think about the amazing person that she is and how without her selfless act
I would not be blessed to parent James, to be his mother - his Omma.

Last week, I prepared a letter and photos for James' file, so that if /when she
is ready she can acess the file and know that he is happy and healthy and so very loved.

I was suprised at how hard it was to put into words what I wanted to say. It was hard
not to think about the fact that if Korean society was more excepting of children born
out of wedlock that she might have made another choice.... That she loved this little boy so much
that she chose to give him the gift of life knowing that she would not be able to see him live it.

I told her that we love this boy more then life.

How he is so smart and keeps us on our toes.

How he loves animals, being on the go, trains, cars, and anything that big sister is doing.

How we are celebrating his birthday - Big!!! With pony rides and a petting zoo because this
mama remembers how hard it was not to celebrate his first birthday with him so this year
we are making up for it. Oh, and how James will be going on vacation in a few months to Disney too.

And how I think of her often and pray that she has peace in her heart....
that I will try my hardest to give him the great big beautiful life she hoped for him when she made an adoption plan.... that I promise to send updates each year so that she can see James grow...and that I will
always support any relationship the two of them might have in the future.

As James' birthday gets closer I am sure that this is a tough time for her.
Please pray that she has peace and can feel in her heart that James is happy, healthy, and finally home.

Legacy of an Adopted Child

Once there were two women who never knew each other.

One you do not remember, the other you call mother.

Two different lives, shaped to make your one...

One became your guiding star, the other became your sun.

The first gave you life and the second taught you to live it.

The first gave you a need for love, and the second was there to give it.

One gave you a nationality, the other gave you a name.

One gave you a seed of talent, the other gave you an aim.

One gave you emotions, the other calmed your fears.

One saw your first sweet smile, the other dried your tears.

One gave you up ... that's all she could do.

The other prayed for a child and God led her straight to you.

And now you ask me, through your fears,

the age old question unanswered throughout the years...

Heredity or environment, which are you the product of?

Neither, my darling … neither.

Just two different kinds of love.

Happy Birthday Zoey!!!

Five years ago, at this very moment, I was in the hospital
praying with everything that I had that Zoey would be healthy.
We knew that she would be born premature....
the doctors were amazed that I had made it to 30 weeks.
After months of bedrest in the hospital, appointments and specialists,
and a roller coaster ride of emotions there was nothing more
that modern medicine could do - August 20th was the day-Zoey's Birthday.

I wish that I could say that it was a magical event filled with soft music and a perfect birthplan...
but it wasn't. The small room was quickly crowded with doctors and specialists as the monitor showed
that her heartrate was quickly dropping. It was a whirlwind... so much was going on around me but I stayed silent ...silent and prayed that this baby girl who was so wanted, longed for, and loved would breath.

And then she entered the world...and the room was silent... at first she didn't cry.
I kept crying  "is she alright, is she alright" and that brief moment in time seemed a million years long.
And then she cried..... a soft cry that let me know she was alive, and breathing.

She was a MIRACLE.

It may have been her Birth Day but I definitely got the greatest gift that day.... to be her MaMa.

The journey in the Nicu was hard,
but i knew that I was meant to be a mother...
her mother....and that from the moment she came into the world
that my life would never be the same.

It would be more....

...more meaningful....

...purposeful....

...filled with more joy then we ever thought we would know.

To watch her grow, and learn, and develop has brought so much more to our lives.

The time goes so quickly and I try to freeze the moments in my mind.

The days turn to months and the months into years...

and you really can't help to wonder where the time went.

Somehow, in the blink of an eye...

the tiny little girl that I watched struggling to breathe in the
NICU is so much older, more mature, and not so little.

She is "5".

Sweet baby girl,

You light up our lives more then we ever imagined.

It is amazing to watch you grow...to take your special needs and flourish...to turn them into gifts.

This past year you have accomplised so much, learned so much, matured so much.
You embraced your role as big sister and it is fun to watch this new relationship develop.

Keeping working hard and reaching big - nothing is impossible.

We love you sweet princess.... to the moon and back...infinity and more...forever and ever.
